Charles Pinet was born in Paris on January 28, 1867, to a family originally from Cogny in the Beaujolais region. His mother, Marie Lambert, was a seamstress on rue Mazarine. His father, Étienne Marie Jean Baptiste Stéphane Pinet, recognized the child. He was a boarder at the Collège de Thoissey, in the Ain department, until his baccalaureate. There he was introduced to etching by Canon Paul Taconnet, a professor of mathematics and drawing. A pupil of Gustave Moreau, he moved to Paris where he devoted himself to etching.
