Engraved Printers Proof, Group Of Two Mast Topsail Schooners, Battling Rough Waters, Matte Framed.

The name “schooner” first appeared in eastern North America in the early 1700s. The origins of schooner-rigged vessels are somewhat obscure, but there is evidence of them from the early 17th century in paintings by Dutch marine artists. The earliest known illustration of a schooner depicts a yacht owned by the mayors of Amsterdam, drawn by the Dutch artist Rool and dated 1600. Later examples show schooners in Amsterdam in 1638 and New Amsterdam (now New York) in 1627. By the end of the 17th century, schooner rigs were common in England and Holland. On fast hulls, good windward ability made schooners useful for these roles. These were often schooners, designed for the conveyance of passengers and goods. Noted for their quick passage, they transported perishable cargo on routes like the Azores to Britain. Schooners worked the Grand Banks of Newfoundland and were highly regarded. The ease of handling in confined waters and smaller crew requirements made schooners common in the 19th century. Some schooners operated on deep-sea routes.

Imagine those old two-mast schooners battling rough waters, picture their graceful lines, efficient rigging, and the thrill of adventure on the high seas!
