"Wayne very rarely had a slump," Oilers great Mark Messier recalled. "But when the team had a slump, oftentimes the Oilers would surprise Wayne and fly Walter in somewhere on the road trip. Edmonton tough guy Dave Semenko always used to joke, 'Well I guess we're going to win tonight. Walter's in town.'
