Viking Belt Mount, Mixed Group Of Bronze Plaques, 9th-11th Century AD.

A Mixed Group of Bronze Plaques comprising, one D-shaped domed three lugs to the reverse, one piriform scroll motif, one a rosette with beast-head beneath, one tongue-shaped trefoil detail, two bulbous with scroll detail scooped upper edge. Property of an American collector acquired in 1980-2000.

Early medieval casting had deep traditions since the Bronze Age. The Viking Age process probably looked quite the same as it already had done for a couple of thousand years. If the Bronze Age was the golden age of bronze casting, the craft didn't die with the coming of iron. Metal casting still played an important social part in the production of jewellery and prestige objects, production of social codes telling about identity and belonging; of sworn fidelity and of alliances.
