Shield Nickel 1867 Copper and Nickel.
Shield Nickel 1867 Copper and Nickel.
The Shield Nickel, which took its name from the motif on its obverse side, was designed by James B. Longacre and issued from 1886 - 1883. It was based on his already Two-Cent piece designs and symbolized the Strength of a Unified America. It was the first US Five-Cent piece to be made from a Copper and Nickel mixture, the same alloy that's used in today's US nickel production. It was also the first Five-Cent coins to be nick-named as 'The Nickel' whereas before such pieces were referred to as 'Half Dimes'.
