Onyx is a banded variety of the oxide mineral chalcedony. Agate and onyx are both varieties of layered chalcedony that differ only in the form of the bands, agate has curved bands and onyx has parallel bands. Commonly, specimens of onyx contain bands of black and/or white.
Carnelian a glassy, translucent stone, is an orange-coloured variety of Chalcedony, a mineral of the Quartz family. Its colour varies from pale pinkish-orange to a deep rusty brown, though it is most known for its brilliant orange and red-orange crystals.
Jasper, an aggregate of micro-granular quartz and/or chalcedony and other mineral phases, is an opaque, impure variety of silica, usually red, yellow, brown or green in colour, and rarely blue. The common red colour is due to iron (III) inclusions.
