Earrings, Sterling Silver, MCM Mid-Century Modern, Brutalist Style Screw Back Earrings, By Van Dell. When Describing Jewellery, “Brutalist” Refers To a Bold, Edgy, and Often Unconventional Style. This Style Emerged In The Mid-20th Century. Pieces Often Have a Handmade Look with Bumpy, Knobby, Or Rough Surfaces. Designs Frequently Feature Repeated Geometric Forms That are asymmetric and abstract. Jewelry In This Style Tends To Be Substantial and Visually Striking.

When one thinks of the more popular designers of the mid-20th Century, the name Van Dell does not necessarily come to mind. It is not, that the work of the designer, is not fabulous, it is just that the pieces are not, as often seen, as, some other designers such as Trifari, Sarah Coventry, Coro and the like.

The Van Dell Corporation was founded in 1938 in Providence Rhode Island. The company manufactured well-made sterling silver, gold-filled and gold-plated jewellery rather than more commonly made costume jewellery in the base metal. Many of Van Dell’s designs used cultured pearls, interesting rhinestones and other stones such as Austrian Crystals. They also included genuine hand-carved cameos. The jewellery was of high quality and was meant to resemble fine jewellery. The mark Van Dell was first used in 1939.

If you are looking for well-made mid-century jewellery, look for designs made by Van Dell.
