Dominoes are thought to have come about in China during the Yuan Dynasty (1200s AD). Chinese folklore claims the game was created by Hung-Ming, a soldier-hero who lived between 181 and 234 AD, as a way to keep his troops entertained. However, stories from Chinese labourers in the United States suggest that Hung Ming invented dominoes, to keep his soldiers alert while on night watch. The current game of dominoes became popular in Italy in the 18th century.
