African, Hand Carved, Makonde Family Tree Of Life Statue.
The Makonde are an ethnic group in southeast Tanzania and northern Mozambique. The Makonde developed their culture on the Mueda Plateau in Mozambique. At present they live throughout Tanzania and Mozambique and have a small presence in Kenya.
The Makonde of Tanzania and Mozambique are one of the most prolific art producing peoples in eastern Africa. They are also known for their masks and their traditional and modern sculptures.
African sculpture is most often figurative, representing the human form and fashioned primarily from wood but it can also be stylized and abstracted and carved from stone. It can span centuries and be as ancient as the advent of tools and it can be as modern as right now, today, where it is lauded and appreciated as a contemporary art form.
