''Crying In The Chapel'' was written by Artie Glenn. It was inspired by a personal experience he had while suffering from a series of back problems that had him hospitalized and in line for surgery. According to his youngest son Larry Glenn, he prayed to God promising him he would become a better person if he helped him with his recovery. Not only was his spinal procedure a success, but his recovery was as well and once he was discharged, he left to find a nearby Church, which happened to be the Loving Avenue Baptist Church of Fort Worth, Texas; the closest one in proximity to the hospital. While praying there, he shed tears of joy. This did not go unnoticed, inspiring him to write this song.

It was first recorded by his other son Darrell Glenn. After him, other musicians recorded their versions including Rex Allen, June Valli, The Orioles', Ella Fitzgerald, Art Lund, Lee Lawrence, and Rosetta Tharpe. However, the most successful recording was from Elvis Presley. On April 6, 1965, "Crying In the Chapel" was issued on RCA's "Gold Standard Series." It became Elvis' first million-seller since "Return to Sender" in 1962 and his greatest chart success over six years. The single hit number 3 on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart and topped the Easy Listening Chart for seven weeks. It also reached number 1 in the UK. Later, it was included as a bonus track on Presley's 1967 gospel album, How Great Thou Art. ''Crying In The Chapel'' on SIDE A; "I Believe In The Man In The Sky'' (Howard) and ''Milky White Way" (Arrangement by Elvis Presley) on SIDE B.
